Timothy was a young pastor in Ephesus. Ephesus was the first stop on Paul’s mission trip. Paul assigned Timothy at Ephesus and advised him through letters to stand for godliness. Timothy had the struggle of keeping his church focused while meeting persecution from Rome. The threat from Rome made the people of Timothy’s thriving church fear for their lives and this church began to dwindle.

The church has been known to experience its greatest growth during times of persecution. Through history examples can be found of pastors and Christians standing in spite of persecution and God honoring their perseverance. The Bible says we will be slandered and falsely accused for His sake. God is looking for people who will stand in defense of His law.

Paul sent encouragement in his letters. He reminded Timothy of his mother and grandmother praying for him and dedicating him to the work of God. He reminded him of being anointed to preach the word of God.

1 Timothy 3:16
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

This is the basis of the gospel. A savior was prophesied, sent, witnessed, believed, died, arose, and went to the right hand of God.
