If the Foundations Be Destroyed
Jesus is the foundation of our faith. If the foundations are destroyed, what will the righteous do?
Old Testament Foundations
Religion for the Jewish was where they found identity. They believe God is the sovereign creator of the world. The first words of the Old Testament force you to believe or reject Him. Secondly, God took from Adam to give him a helpmate. When God takes something from us, it for the purpose to give us something greater. Then, the commandments given to Moses gave the Jews a set of boundaries to live by.
In Psalm 11:4, David is speaking of these foundational standards. The standards set the stage for bringing about a new relationship with Him. God always intended to be in close relationship with us.
The sacrifices made daily and yearly by the priest who stood in the place for us was a temporary system to get forgiveness of sins. However, this system could never provide eternal forgiveness of sins.
Hebrews 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
David was chosen to replace King Saul. Saul had overstepped his boundaries and bypassed the priests duties as the only one authorized to enter the tabernacle to offer the blood of animals for sins. God sent Samuel to anoint David as king. Saul became jealous and sought to kill David. In his jealousy, Saul executed and battled and attacked priests and innocent people.
In these troubled times, David began to write words of praise. He professed to serve God and seek righteousness despite Saul attempting to destroy the foundations of their religion.
What will the righteous do?
Today, God’s people are being asked to choose if they will stand on our foundation. Will we turn from what we’ve always trusted? Will we allow the foundations to be destroyed? What will the righteous do? Number one we must DO RIGHT! Secondly, fix your eyes on Jesus. If we lose our foundation, we lose our testimony and our influence. God’s people cannot let our foundation be destroyed.
1 Corinthians 3:10-11
According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buyildethv thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
1 Timothy 6:19
Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
When our foundation is destroyed (Psalm 11:5-7):
- Wickedness and evil will prevail.
- People begin to do what is right in their own eye.
- They will lie to their neighbor.
- Wickedness will be exalted over righteousness.
- People will deny the existence of God.
