My devotion this morning came from Joshua chapter one and talked about being successful in life. Joshua had been chosen to fill Moses role as leader of the children of Israel. Joshua had watched God work through Moses to lead the children out of bondage and toward the promised land God had given them. Now, God was promising Joshua success in leading the children of God into their promised place. (Joshua 1:7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.) If you asked someone today how successful they have been in life you would get common answers. They would tell you how much money they have, how many investments they have made, how lofty of a position they hold, and how much material things they have obtained. All of these can be favors of God to his children, but none of these was what God was promising Joshua when he talked about being successful. For Joshua, success was military fortitude to win the battles ahead, steadfast faith to lead a nation of people, and the ability to complete the journey Moses had begun. Fortune and fame were the last thing on his mind. He wanted to fulfill God’s plan for his life. If you want your life to be successful, you have to obey God’s will and fulfill God’s plan for your life. Nothing else will matter in eternity. Pastor Don
