Be Grateful
Prosperity often presents an opportunity to forget about God. We see it time and time again in the Bible, and we see it everyday in our own lives. It’s so easy to pray and ask God for things, and forget to give him the glory when he gives us the things we asked for be it healing, a promotion at work, etc.
The blessings of God should constantly be in our remembrance and thanksgiving and praise should always be on our lips.
Don’t wait until tragedy comes to remember God’s goodness, God’s mercy, and God’s sovereignty.
Job was a man that was perfect and upright, the one who feared God and eschewed evil (Job 1:1). Job was very prosperous, and he cared about his children’s relationship with God. One day, Job’s life was turned upside down. He lost everything he had. Every animal he owned had been killed. Every servant he owned had been killed. His children were killed. The Bible says Job tore his garments, shaved his head, fell down upon the ground and worshipped (Job 1:20). Job 1:22 says that through everything Job endured, he didn’t sin or charge God foolishly.
God doesn’t change, people do.
God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Like in Job, God may allow bad things to happen to you, but remember that God is sovereign in your situation just like he was sovereign in Job’s. When you overcome your trouble, thank God and remember Him for what he brought you through.
Verses from today’s sermon:
Deuteronomy 6:10-12
When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
Deuteronomy 32:15
Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; filled with food, they became heavy and sleek.
They abandoned the God who made them and rejected the Rock their Savior.
Jeshurun (poetic name of Israel). Israel became prosperous and they turned away from God promised them a day they would reach the promised land.
Deuteronomy 32:18
You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.
Revelation 3:16-18
So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
