David was called the man after God’s own heart and the sweet singer. He wrote some of those songs and sought God during times of great distress, sadness, and repentance. Through these hard times, God was shaping David. David had to depend on what he knew to be true about God to persevere through those troubling times. In David’s latter years, he proclaimed he had never been forsaken by God.

Psalm 37: 1-2

David wrote Psalm 37 in his later years after having suffered great disappointment and shame. He began by warning against fretting and becoming envious. To fret can be translated as do not become cold. He warned against becoming cold and envious toward others.

Psalm 37: 3

He advised to trust in God and do good, do right. Trust and do right even when it doesn’t feel like He’s working.

Psalm 37: 4-6

It’s one thing to trust God. It’s something else to delight and commit yourself in God. Shout and rejoice and be delighted in God’s promises. Lay up treasures for the things of the Lord. Commit yourself to God and He will bring His promises to pass.

Psalm 37: 7

Rest and be patient for the day the Lord will return and fulfill all promises.

Psalm 37: 8

Cease from anger. God will answer the evildoers.

David sought God through all manner of mental, emotional, physical battles. He chose to seek God and strive to not fall to the influence of sinners. He believed God could change lives and he believed God would never forsake him as long as he called on Him.
