Joshua is a book about extremes. It describes having nothing and then being in abundance. It lets us know God always has a plan. God always has an anointed person to step in and take the lead. To be commanded is a different experience than to command. Many people will never be put in a position to command if they have never been a good follower of commands. God qualifies and anoints who He calls. We have all received a holy calling from when the world began. When we step into that calling depends on our response to God’s commands. We receive this holy calling according to His holy plan. We are most productive and God is most blessed when we work within our calling and God’s commandment of courage.

Joshua 1:9
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

We have a commandment of courage in God’s will for our life. Strong in His word, in your convictions, and in His plan. David said the Lord is the strength of my life. Be strong in His power and might. He commanded that we be strong.

At the same time, He says to be of good courage and not afraid. He didn’t say don’t be concerned, attentive, or mindful. He said don’t let it control you to the point of being frightful. Sometimes worry and anxiousness can make us behave in a way we don’t won’t to behave. When Jesus said a sparrow doesn’t fall without the Father knowing. The Hebrew verbiage there for “knowing” means without that the Father doesn’t cup His hands and catch the sparrow in its fall.

When the children of Israel were in the desert, they went continuously from moments of faithfulness and courage to quarreling and fear. They would threaten Moses’s life one moment and praise him for his connection with God and His blessings the next. Once Moses was taken and buried by God, the children of Israel became afraid. They lost their courage. God placed Joshua in the position of leadership to continue the plan God had for them. God always has an anointed person to step in and take the lead.

David’s prayer form the cave, Psalm 142 is a powerful prayer for when your courage is waning.
