Words of Rest | Enemy Rises, Stand Firm, Watch God Fight For You

When the enemy rises against you, stand firm in faith like Hezekiah—repair your altar, trust in the Lord’s strength, and watch as God Himself fights and wins your battles.

King Hezekiah rose to leadership in a time when Judah’s worship had grown cold and the temple doors had been shut. In the very first year of his reign, he reopened and repaired the house of the Lord, calling the priests and Levites to sanctify themselves and cleanse the temple. Revival began with a return to holiness and worship.

Hezekiah’s heart was fully devoted to God—he served with truth, zeal, and integrity. Because of his faithfulness, God caused him to prosper in all that he did. But soon came the test. Sennacherib, the powerful king of Assyria, invaded Judah, threatening to destroy Jerusalem. Instead of panicking, Hezekiah prepared wisely, fortified the city, encouraged the people, and declared, “Be strong and courageous… With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and fight our battles.”

When Hezekiah prayed and trusted the Lord, God sent an angel to destroy the Assyrian army overnight. What human strength could not do, divine power accomplished instantly. The Lord delivered Judah and surrounded them with peace.

  • Hezekiah restored worship and reopened the temple (2 Chr. 29:3–5).
  • He served God with all his heart—and prospered (2 Chr. 31:20–21).
  • The enemy attacked after Hezekiah’s faithfulness (2 Chr. 32:1).
  • Hezekiah trusted in God’s strength, not human might (2 Chr. 32:7–8).
  • God sent an angel and destroyed the enemy completely (2 Chr. 32:21–22).

2 Chronicles 32:7–8

“Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed before the king of Assyria, nor before all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people were strengthened by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

2 Chronicles 29:3–5

In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he opened the doors of the house of the Lord and repaired them. Then he brought in the priests and the Levites, and gathered them in the east square, and said to them: “Hear me, Levites! Now sanctify yourselves, sanctify the house of the Lord God of your fathers, and carry out the rubbish from the holy place.”

2 Chronicles 31:20–21

Thus Hezekiah did throughout all Judah, and he did what was good and right and true before the Lord his God. And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, in the law and in the commandment, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart. So he prospered.

2 Chronicles 32:1–8, 21–22

After these deeds of faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entered Judah; he encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them over to himself. And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and that his purpose was to make war against Jerusalem, he consulted with his leaders and commanders to stop the water from the springs which were outside the city; and they helped him. Thus many people gathered together who stopped all the springs and the brook that ran through the land, saying, “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?” And he strengthened himself, built up all the wall that was broken, raised it up to the towers, and built another wall outside; also he repaired the Millo in the City of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance. Then he set military captains over the people, gathered them together to him in the open square of the city gate, and gave them encouragement, saying, “Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed before the king of Assyria, nor before all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people were strengthened by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
Then the Lord sent an angel who cut down every mighty man of valor, leader, and captain in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned shamefaced to his own land. And when he had gone into the temple of his god, some of his own offspring struck him down there with the sword. Thus the Lord saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria, and from the hand of all others, and guided them on every side.
