The Discarded Garment
We hear a lot about change, but the change offered by men seldom brings change. But, the change offered by God- changes everything. When you come to Jesus, you will not leave the same. You won’t keep carrying the things that weigh you down. The one whom the Son sets free is free indeed.
The enemy tries to put a garment on us that was never intended for us to wear. We are not meant to wear a beggars garment. We are the children of God. He owns the cattle of a thousand hills.
Mark 10:46-50
46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.
Jericho was known as a cursed place (Joshua 6). We don’t know why Bartimaeus was blind. We just know that he was blind, and that is what he was known for. Things we see can corrupt our eyesight and affect our faith.
47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.
The blind man saw Jesus for what seeing people missed.
48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me.
The ‘many’ in this scripture were the people following Christ. They had everything Bartimaeus needed, but they acted like he couldn’t have it because he was different than them. Bartimaeus cried out all the more. He didn’t let others discourage him from getting the miracle he desired.
49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.
A blind beggar made Jesus stand still, and the people that told him to be quiet had to go tell him to be of good comfort and that Jesus called for him.
50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.
He threw off his garment because he was expecting a miracle. He wasn’t going back to that way of life anymore.
51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.
Jesus asked Bartimaeous what he wanted Jesus to do for him. Jesus- the king of kings and lord of lords asked the blind man what he wanted him to do for him.
52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
Bartimaeous’ faith made him whole. He left his old garment, and he received his sight. He expected a miracle. He had faith that he would receive his sight. He received his miracle and he followed Jesus.
We have to let the world know that we are the church. The things that have labeled us in our past won’t matter where we’re going. Our God knows no bounds. He goes to those that are broken. If we leave our old garments, if we change our ways, and set our sights on God, he will deliver us. He will give us new life.
