A Good Father
Bible Text: I Corinthians 4:15 | Speaker: Pastor Jerry Irwin | A Father’s Day message suggesting 5 roles of a father.
II Corinthians 4:15 For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.
There is a difference between an instructor and a father. The church needs spiritual fathers.
5 Roles of the Father
He is a Guardian
He must be a wise watchman, and first to see the storm clouds gathering on the horizon. The wind of trouble and adversity first blows upon the face of a father.
2. He is a Giver
Not only does he provide food and shelter by the toil of mind and hands, he also provides love and support. He is the wind beneath the wings of his children and wife. He knows his role as husband and father, and partners with his wife to provide a safe and loving environment for his children.
3. He is a Promoter
While Jesus was standing in the ;baptismal waters, God said, “This is my beloved son, hear ye Him.”
The devil is after your children! Promote your family!
4. He is a Priest
God’s intention is that a father is to intercede for his family. Nobody can pray for those kids like a dad can. No one can pray for his wife like a spiritual dad can.
Luke 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, That men ought always to pray and not to faint,
II Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
5. He is a Prophet
A good father speaks into the lives of His children. He tells them what they can be and what they can do. A good dad tells his children what God’s word says.
Genesis 35:18 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.
When Rachael died, she was giving birth to her second son. She said in her last breath, his name shall be called Benoni, which means “Son of my sorrow”. But Jacob said he would not name this child Benoni but Benjamin which means “Son of my strength, son of my right hand”. He prophesied over that baby and told him what he was going to be. We need dads who will prophesy to their children and speak positive things into their life.
