Jesus healing the bent-over woman in the synagogue Luke 13, illustrating freedom from spiritual bondage and living in the ought not through Christ’s power

Living in the Ought Not | Step Out and Into Freedom

Jesus Christ sees your bondage, calls you out of it, and has the power to loose you—so come to Him today and step out of the “ought not” into the freedom you ought to live in.

The Opportunistic Enemy

The enemy is an opportunist, constantly seeking an open door into your life. Just as Solomon allowed compromise that turned his heart, so too can subtle allowances give the enemy access. This woman in Luke 13 was not merely sick—she was bound by a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years. It is a reminder that not everything is natural; some battles are spiritual, and the enemy seeks to keep God’s people living beneath what they ought to be.

What She Ought to Be

Jesus identifies her as a “daughter of Abraham” (Luke 13:16), meaning she was a woman of covenant, promise, and blessing. She ought to have been lifted up, blessed, and a blessing to others. God’s promises over her life declared greatness, favor, and purpose. Likewise, as children of God, we ought to live in victory, joy, and spiritual authority—not in defeat or despair.

The Reality of Being Bound

Despite what she ought to be, the reality was she was bowed down, bound, and unable to lift herself. The enemy had positioned her in a place of submission and limitation. She could not fix herself, no matter her effort. Many today live in this same tension—knowing the promises of God, yet experiencing a reality that contradicts them. But the truth remains: what “ought not” be must not be accepted as normal.

A “When Jesus” Moment

Everything changes in Luke 13:12: “When Jesus saw her…” He saw her condition, called her forward, and spoke freedom over her life. Jesus is not passive—He sees, He calls, and He acts. In a moment, He declared, “Woman, thou art loosed.” Even before she stood upright, the Word had already gone forth. Faith must grab hold of His Word before the full manifestation appears.

The Command and the Touch

Jesus not only spoke deliverance, but He also laid His hands on her. His Word brought authority, and His touch brought restoration. Immediately, she was made straight. What had been ruined for eighteen years was restored in a moment. This is the power of Christ—He does not partially deliver; He completely restores.

From “Ought Not” to “Ought To”

Once healed, she glorified God. Her life shifted from bondage to praise, from defeat to victory. What she once could not do, she now freely expressed. This is the life God intends—a life where His people are free, victorious, and walking upright. You are not called to live bound, discouraged, or defeated. You are called to live in what “ought to be”—freedom, authority, and joy in Jesus Christ.

10 Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. 12 But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” 13 And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

Luke 13:16 (NKJV)

16 So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?”
