Let Us Arise and Go Up | God Will Forgive and Restore
When we put away our idols, purify our hearts, and rise in obedience, God meets us again with blessing and purpose—so arise and go back to your Bethel today!
- Jacob settled in Shechem instead of fully obeying God’s call to Bethel.
- His compromise led to tragedy—Dinah’s violation and family turmoil.
- God mercifully called Jacob again to return to Bethel, the place of promise.
- Jacob commanded his household to put away foreign gods and purify themselves.
- At Bethel, Jacob built an altar, renewed his worship, and received fresh blessing.
- God reaffirmed Jacob’s new identity as “Israel” and the covenant of multiplication and inheritance.
- True restoration begins when we return to the place where we first met God.
Jacob’s return to Bethel reminds us that God calls His people back to the place of encounter, restoration, and renewed covenant. His journey reveals the danger of settling short of obedience and the power of returning to God. After leaving Padan Aram, Jacob stopped at Shechem instead of going to Bethel, the place where God had first appeared to him. There, he built a house and bought land, but compromise opened the door to tragedy—his daughter Dinah was violated, and his family became entangled in deceit and violence. Yet God’s mercy prevailed. In Genesis 35, the Lord spoke again, saying, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there.” Jacob obeyed this time, commanding his household to put away idols, purify themselves, and change their garments. At Bethel, Jacob built an altar and worshiped the God who had answered him in distress and guided him all his days. There, God appeared to him again, reaffirmed his new name “Israel,” and renewed His covenant of blessing, fruitfulness, and inheritance. This moment at Bethel marked a spiritual renewal—Jacob left behind compromise and rediscovered divine purpose. Like Jacob, we are called to return to our Bethel—the place of encounter, surrender, and fresh covenant with God.

Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body. 12 The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.”
