Among the many devices of the devil’s attack on our faith is the human desire for comfort. We love to live our lives in a comfort zone. Jesus even promised to never leave us comfortless, but says, “I will come unto you” (John 14:18)

God sent us a Comforter

The Holy Spirit is the great comforter that the Father sent to comfort us in all things.

John 14:16
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.

1 Thessalonians 3:1-13
So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens. We sent Timothy, who is our brother and co-worker in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,  so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. For you know quite well that we are destined for them. In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know. For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain. But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you.  Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.  How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?  Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

The Comforter

A comforter is inside you and we must live by faith. Do you feed your faith? Large doses of the word of God will fill your faith. It works when nothing else will. The enemy is constantly challenging your faith. There is a promise given to us and there is place called the Shadow of the Almighty God where you can find rest and encouragement (Psalms 91:1).

For Moses that place was the cleft in the rock.

For David that place was the cave of Adullam.

For Elijah that places the cave at Horeb.

For Peter that place was the rooftop of the house of Simon.

For the disciples that place was the upper room.

For John the Baptist that place was the wilderness.

For Jesus it was the Garden of Gethsemane.

There is a Love for us.

God has great love for us in giving us the comfort of His presence. What can separate us from the love of God?

Romans 8:31-33
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?  He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.
