God’s Open Invitation: “Ask”
In 1 Kings 3:5, God appears to Solomon and gives a staggering invitation: “Ask what I shall give thee.” This moment reveals the heart of God toward His children—He is not reluctant, distant, or guarded. He invites us to ask. As we enter a new year filled with uncertainty and change, the same unchanging God still calls His people to trust Him enough to ask boldly.
Asking for the Right Heart
Solomon’s response in 1 Kings 3:7–8 shows humility, honesty, and dependence. Aware of his weakness and inexperience, Solomon asks God for an understanding heart. This request pleased the Lord because it placed character above comfort and obedience above ambition. God still honors those who ask for hearts that hear, discern, and love people as He does.
Asking for the Harvest
In Psalm 2:8, God promises the nations as an inheritance to those who ask. The church is not called to comfort but to commission. We ask not for resources, recognition, or ease—but for people. The harvest includes the broken, the lost, and the overlooked, and God invites His church to ask boldly for souls.
Asking for the Old Paths and the Rain
Jeremiah 6:13–16 calls God’s people back to the old paths—the proven way of holiness, truth, and conviction. Zechariah 10:1 reminds us that revival does not happen by accident; it comes when God’s people ask for rain. When the church asks, God sends refreshing, renewal, and growth.
1 Kings 3:5
5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?”
1 Kings 7-8:
7 Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted.
Psalm 2:8
Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
Jeremiah 6:13-16
13 “Because from the least of them even to the greatest of them, Everyone is given to covetousness; And from the prophet even to the priest, Everyone deals falsely. 14 They have also healed the hurt of My people slightly, Saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ When there is no peace. 15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No! They were not at all ashamed; Nor did they know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; At the time I punish them, They shall be cast down,” says the Lord.
